The last morning of a festival has a sound, and it is mostly zippers. Suitcases lined along the lobby wall, everyone moving half a step slower than the night before, and the hugs running a beat too long, the kind both people know are goodbye for now. On Friday most of these people were strangers. Nobody planned to care this much by Sunday.
We film a lot at a festival that no dancer thinks to point a camera at, and the departure lobby is one of them. It is the least glamorous hour of the weekend and one of the most honest. You can read the whole event on people’s faces on the way out, and a room full of reluctant goodbyes tells you more about whether it worked than any headline show did.
The low that follows is real, and it is the truest review a festival can get. You do not grieve a weekend that did not matter. The dip is just the size of the connection, measured on the way home, the flat Monday, the socials that suddenly feel small, the flights half-booked for next year before the wristband is even off.
You do not grieve a weekend that did not matter.
